Umpires and Match Officials

No hockey without umpires!

At Wilmslow Hockey Club we recognise the importance and value of umpires to our sport, to our club and to all of our members.

We are very willing to support any member (adult or junior) or any parent/guardian who would like to train as a new umpire. The initial training is all online, booked through the England Hockey Hub training site.

Once trained we can arrange for new umpires to start with a friendly game or perhaps a junior game to build confidence. We can also arrange for training so umpires can collaborate using 2-way radios.

We also intend to support umpires develop their experience and expertise with further training, assessments and coaching.

We offer to pay our umpires to recognise the value of what they do.

See the additional pages for more details on training, development and payments.

Training for new umpires

We welcome any adult member, junior member or parent/guardian to take the Level 1 Umpire training course (a 2 hour online course). There are many courses available to suit your availability. Click the link below ot find a course.

To umpire in the lower leagues, an individual only has to complete the EH basic level 1 training - there is no formal assessment required. Once you've done the training we can help you get assessed as a level 1 umpire and take the level 2 training if/when you are ready.

The club will fund the cost of the training for those who can't afford the fee, provided they do subsequently umpire at least 5 games.

Payments for umpires

To encourage our own members to umpire and to be able to bring in outside umpires if needed, we are willing to pay umpires for home matches as follows:

Adult match £20 (Qualified umpire, including L1 un-assessed)

Adult match £10 (Un-qualified umpire)

Junior match £10 (No qualification required).

Match fee credits for players who also umpire:

  • the match fee credit in Teamo (i.e. match fee reduced to £0) for a player who umpires the same day is part of the fees payable
  • e.g. if you are eligible for a £20 umpire payment and have already received a £10 match fee credit in Teamo you can claim an additional £10 payment.
  • some club umpires generously choose not to claim any umpiring payment or just take the match fee credit, saving the club money.

Guidance for Match Officials (previously known as "TDs")

John Dixon has been appointed to lead technical officiating in the North West Area.

With the help of David Ellcock, who is one of the top ranked Technical Officials in world hockey, John has created the attached document which provides some helpful guidance and tips for those who undertake match officiating within the NW Leagues or if they are required to undertake this role in cup or national league games.
