Welcome

We welcome new junior players!

We welcome junior players from age 5. If you're interested in your son/daughter playing hockey, just bring them along on a Tuesday evening to meet the coaching team. No payment or pre-booking required! We can even provide equipment!

Our aim as a club is to offer the opportunity to children of all ages and abilities to learn the game in a safe, positive and friendly environment.

Recent recommendations from parents/guardians:

  • "Wilmslow Hockey Club is a fantastic club. Family orientated, friendly and supportive. The coaches and parents are wonderful. My son loves the sport and playing for this club!"
  • "I cannot begin to tell you how much he has enjoyed being part of WHC since he was 10 or 11, the great friends he’s made, and the wonderful support he has had from the guys as he has grown up. It’s been absolutely fantastic."
  • "A friendly atmosphere with excellent facilities, superb coaching and well-structured sessions. It's a joy watching the kids make progress every week."
  • The dedication of both Holly and Dave have helped [my daughter] to grow in confidence and last season she stepped into the role of goalkeeper. It’s great to see more kids joining and junior side going from strength to strength."

What hockey experience is required?

None! We welcome players from age 5, regardless of ability. Many junior players join us with little or no hockey experience at all – but they want to give it try. We provide training to help all players develop and enjoy hockey.

What training do you offer?

Our flourishing junior section is led by Dave Middleton-Egan (Junior Club Captain). Dave has a team of enthusiastic, experienced coaches to help our youngsters have fun through hockey and to grow and develop as hockey players and individuals.

When is training?

We run training on Tuesday evenings throughout the hockey season (September – March).

  • U8s and U10s train from 5pm-6pm.
  • U11s and U13s train from 6pm-7pm.

Can we try it out before committing?

Of course. You son/daughter is welcome to join in training sessions on Tuesday evenings before deciding to join the club. If you son/daughter enjoys the first 3 sessions there is a membership fee to pay which covers all training sessions throughout the season.

Can I join part way through the season?

Yes! We accept new junior players throughout the season. We can adjust the membership fee according to the stage of the season if needed.

Do you offer matches as well?

Yes! In addition to Tuesday training our junior players are welcome and encouraged to take part in occasional age-group friendly matches and tournaments with local clubs – usually on a Saturday or Sunday. There is usually a modest match fee for these events.

What equipment do I need?

We can lend sticks to get started and point you in the right direction for mouth guards and shinpads if needed. None of this need be expensive or new - try eBay or Vintedand. We will help wherever we can.

Are parents welcome to watch?

Yes! You’re welcome to watch - we even have a spectator stand to shelter from the rain! We’re a volunteer run, not-for-profit organisation so we would welcome any help you might feel able to give - on or off the pitch! We also encourage parents to support our fundraising by helping to marshal local running events.

How do we get started?

Just come along on a Tuesday evening and ask for Dave or talk to one of our coaches – no pre-booking needed.

How do we find you?

We are proud to have our own artificial grass pitch, clubhouse and parking at Phoenix Sports Club in Styal, just opposite the entrance to Quarry Bank Mill National Trust. Click here to find a map.
