A damp and dull start to the day travelling to Chester, it didn’t get any drier as the match began.
Off to a strong start, Wilmslow took Chester by surprise with player of the day, Izzy R scoring within the first 5 mins. Chester weren’t too pleased so piled on the pressure. Ruth attempted to help the defence by dropping to the baseline but Chester ceased the opportunity to swarm the midfield, getting physical with some suspect tackles, resulting in their captain getting a green card for their efforts.
A blatant foot on the edge of the D went unnoticed but confusion as to whether a whistle was blown, I picked the ball up, earning me donkey of the match. Overall, the first half was panic driven but some great runs by Ella up the wings with some lovely linking play with SVD.
The second half was calmer and another goal in the first 5 mins by Izzy R meant Chester were losing momentum. Runs in and around the D by Thea and Annie meant Wilmslow got a few short corners, Rach P managed to connect and get a goal.
Clearly still keen to win, Chester weren’t ready to give up yet. A flurry of short corners were awarded to Chester much to the confusion of Wilmslow’s defenders. They managed to score 1 past Emma giving them a temporary boost.
Izzy R hadn’t finished her goal scoring rampage and thought 1 more should do it. An excellent game with some impressive hockey. A few new faces to the L2s line up meant we had to rely on our training for the press and formation. Thanks to Liam for his coaching with plenty of transfers and great positional play.
Annie narrowly missed out of player of the day with comments from her teammates such as ‘wonderful assists, hard working and created space’. Other votes for player of the day were Ruth, Anya, Thea and Ella.
